What is the difference between monarchy, democracy, oligarchy, authoritarianism, totalitarianism, republic, socialism, and communism? If you take away the power of authority and no one is in charge, they are all the same: constitutionalism. This is what we are headed toward: custom governance based on community consensus.
Blockchain is permissionless and borderless. This is going to create incredibly diverse opt-in governance. If you don't like your country you literally will be able to "get-out". A return to diverse city-states is a real possibility.
It could also create multiple physical territories in different locations that obey the same rule of law. How weird would it be to fly half way around the world to a place that used the same government as your homeland? How much weirder would it be if you could legally vote there just the same as you would have otherwise? These are real possibilities of the future that are completely impossible and laughable right now.
Speaking of voting, rigged elections will eventually become a thing of the past. Eliminating the middle men eliminates the corruption. Did I mention direct democracy is a real possibility for the first time ever? Humanity is on the verge of waking up from its counter productive tribalism. Competition is no longer necessary; resources are heavily abundant.
This raises the question: do we really even want direct democracy? Should everyone's opinion be valued equally no matter what the topic is? We certainly don't abide that philosophy when it comes to any other topics of conversation. Would we trust a communication major's opinion on the concept of string theory or any other field that requires mastery? No. Then why would politics be any different?
Today everyone's vote counts the same because the alternative is too complicated and bound to breed rampant corruption. However, what happens when we can eliminate that centralized corruption with the power and trust of the blockchain?
I won't be surprised if some kind of proof-of-knowledge consensus algorithm is invented that gives users who are actually educated on various topics more voting power. Coinbase is already paying users to "learn about crypto". Sure, it sounds ridiculous now. How could that possibly work? However, proof-of-work seemed like an equally ridiculous notion until it proved itself time and time again as a secure and superior option when considering trust. A very large majority of the world still has no idea why Bitcoin is valuable in the first place. It's going to be hard to keep up with all the developments.
A vast number of superior systems that were previously impossible to implement are going to rain down on society in exponential fashion. Technologies are going to be created in the near future that we'll wonder how on Earth we ever survived without them. It's going to be the Internet times a thousand fold.
Everyone is trying to make that crypto money today, but if everything works out like I think it will money will be largely irrelevant unless you're trying to expend massive amounts of resources. There's absolutely no reason why everyone on the planet can't be taken care of. The only thing standing in our way is tribalism and the centralized control of power that comes with it.
I can dream.
